What is a Root Canal? A root canal is a procedure done to save a tooth when the pulp is dead or damaged. This is done by cleaning out the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal. The canal is filled with a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha or another material resilon to prevent recontamination of the tooth.
Why do I need a Root Canal? Root canal therapy is necessary because the tooth will not heal by itself. Without treatment, the infection will spread, bone around the tooth will degenerate, and the tooth may fall out.
Why should I save my tooth? Teeth are important for chewing and your appearance, but they also maintain your bite in correct alignment. When a tooth is extracted, teeth may shift leading to future dental problems.
Do you put people to sleep? No! We only use local anesthesia. If you feel you need to be put to sleep we can refer you to an office that does that!
Does it hurt? There is some discomfort in any dental procedure, but if you have a positive attitude the procedure shouldn't be any more painful than a regular filling. Dr. Jet has performed thousands of root canals and will perform the procedure as painless as possible.
How successful are Root Canals? NO procedure is 100% successful. The ADA states about 90% of all root canals are successful. The chance of success lessens as more tooth is loss and the longer the tooth has been infected! If the tooth is not successful, you may need an extraction or further endodontic surgery.
How long does the procedure take? The average root canal takes 1-2 visits each lasting about 1.5hours.
I'm coming a long way. Will the procedure be performed that day? Most of the time yes! Unless the tooth is so badly infected or you show up late, the procedure will not be attempted.
What complication can occur during or after the procedure? Files are used to clean the tooth and at times due to calcifications or curvatures in the tooth, a file may break or separate in the tooth. At times it can be retrieved and other times it may be left. This may or may not effect the outcome. Also, peforations or a puncture in the tooth may occur. Swelling may develop or infection may not resolve and a patient may have permanent numbness to the area. Please keep in mind Dr. Jet will advise you of all your options go over the prognosis and allow you to make an informed decision!
